Luperón is a tranquil town with approximately 4,000 inhabitants on the Dominican Atlantic coast. The municipality of Luperón has about 18,000 inhabitants. The provincial capital Puerto Plata is 50 km away and the metropolis Santiago, the second largest city in the country, is 70 km away. Both cities with their international airports can be reached by good roads in 60 to 90 minutes.

The great advantage of Luperón is the combination of excellent location and lack of mass tourism. This guarantees a quiet and safe stay in beautiful surroundings.

History

The village was named in 1927 after Gregorio Luperón, an important general in the Restoration War from 1863 to 1865, who later became president of the Domincan Republic. Until then, the place was known as Puerto Blanco, which is still the name of the beautiful marina.

History is omnipresent in this part of the Caribbean, since on his first two voyages Christopher Columbus founded the first two settlements in the New World only a short distance west of Luperón: on the first voyage La Navidad, which can no longer be found today, and on the second voyage La Isabela, located only 15km west of Luperón, which in addition to beautiful beaches also houses the oldest church in the Americas and an archaeological park.

Infrastructure & Harbour

The infrastructure of Luperón is above average for a community of this size. The modern health center should be emphasized, which has a continuously staffed outpatient clinic as well as several inpatient beds.

The biggest attraction of the city is the unique spacious natural harbor, which already offered Christopher Columbus shelter for his fleet and was therefore called by him Puerto de Gracia (Port of Thanks). Even today, numerous boat owners from the surrounding Atlantic ports seek the protection of this unique place during storm warnings.
